Itinerary
Upon arrival, begin your nice walking
near the biggest market of the country where thousands of people come and trade
except on Buddhist Sabbath Days. Visit Mahamuni temple; most revered Buddha
images by car and walk through the marble carving lane of Mandalay and observe
how they curve the huge marble stones to become elephants, Buddha, and many
other according to the order.
Walk in Tanpawaddi Bronze casting lane where many
artisans still craft their bronze in the way their great great grand fathers
did. Mandalay is, in fact, well known for its skilled craftsmen and as you tour
traditional workshops. There is a chance to observe Mandalay’s treasured wood
carvings, kalaga tapestries, and gold-leaf crafting.
In the afternoon, visit Shwenandaw Monastery, the last surviving building from
the last kingdom’s Royal Palace and witness the best wood carvings in the
world. Then walk to Kuthodaw Pagoda, famous as the world’s biggest book with
729 marble stone slabs of Buddhist scripture. After that a hike up to the top
of Mandalay Hill will be rewarding with panoramic view and the sun set.

In the morning, cross MYITNGE River
by a small boat and start exploring the former Royal Capital INWA (AVA) by a
horse cart. Visit Nanmyint tower, Maha Aungmye Bonzan monastery, built of brick
and stucco; Bargaya monastery, famous for its impressive ornate woodcarvings
and teak posts. Continue to SAGAING HILLS, a retreat for Buddhist devotees and
the home for the mediators. Sagaing is famous for silver crafts.
Proceed in the Amarapura’s small lane where silk and cotton weaving, dying,
paintings are all part of their daily life. Have a nice break under the big
shady trees by the lake ‘Taung Tha Man’ and sip a fresh coconut. Then walk on
world’s oldest and longest teak bridge called ‘U Bein’ Bridge. The bridge is
constructed by immense teak posts and has been standing in the water for more
than 200 years. Enjoy the breezy stroll on the bridge and the spectacular views
of the surrounding farms and the lake. Before returning to hotel, relax and
watch the sun set at U Bein.
Lunch & Dinner to your own account. Overnight stay at Queen’s Hotel (**,
ROH room) or similar in Mandalay.
After Breakfast, early morning drive (appro-2
hours) on the countryside road will take you to Singu Jetty where your private
boat laid waiting for the day cruise. Explore ashore on the opposite bank,
Nwenyine, the main pottery village of the country where thousands of large
ceramic pots are traditionally crafted by masters and baked in huge kilns.
Then
set sailing down the river Ayerwaddy, enjoy learning the cooking lessons while
a Myanmar chef teach you how to cook simple nice and healthy Myanmar curry. If
luck be on your side, you may spot the infamous Ayerwaddy River Dolphin, one of
the endangered species in the world. Enjoy lunch on board while passing by the
picturesque villages where the time stands still.
After Lunch, a delightful stroll in Mingun village will be rewarding with its
largest un-cracked bell in the world, weighing 90 tons, which was dedicated to
the grandiose unfinished Mingun Pagoda. Visit and observe the beauty of Mya
Thein Tan Zedi which best described the Hindu cosmologic beliefs of Mount
“Meru” that was later integrated into Buddhism. Mingun village is also famous

After breakfast, proceed to MONYWA
(150 km – 4 hours). Visit en route the THANBODDHAY PAGODA; where 845 small
stupas surround and rise up to the richly decorated central stupa. The pogada
is built to remind of Mt. Meru and has some similar characteristics to
Borobudur in Java. Take a walk through the nearby banyan tree grove BODDHI –
TATAUNG where a thousand Buddha Images sitting at the foot of the trees. Enjoy
the panoramic view from AUNG SETKYA PAGODA, standing 130 meter high on the Po
Khaung hills.
After lunch at a simple local restaurant to your own account, cross the CHINDWIN RIVER by ferry boat and proceed by pick up or jeep (40 km – 1 hour) to HPO WIN TAUNG, a network of impressive sandstone caves containing Buddha statues, wood carvings and fine mural paintings, some dating back to the 15th century. Dozens of large and small caves with about 450,000 images are hidden in the area of the Hpo Win Hills. Overnight stay at Win Unity Resort hotel (**).
After breakfast, drive to PAKOKKU (128 km – 4 hours), a port city set south of the Chindwin confluence. On the way you will stop in PAKHANGYI to visit one of the oldest ornate teak monasteries of the country. After lunch at a simple local restaurant to your own account in Pakokku you will visit a typical local market. There is also a possibility to observe a weaving process of typical Myanmar cotton blankets. Continue by boat, on the AYEYARWADDY RIVER, to BAGAN where you will arrive in time for sunset. This down river trip takes approximately 2 hours. Upon arrival in Bagan, transfer to your hotel. Overnight stay in Bagan.
In the morning, visit very famous PON
YAE GYI, bean paste industry of Bagan and walk to the colorful local market
nearby. Appreciate the beauty of SHWEZIGON PAGODA, a proto type religious
shrine built by King Anawrahta in the early 11th century; GU BYAUK GYI, a
temple noted for superb murals of Jataka scenes; KHAY MIN GA TEMPLE, famous for
its panoramic view of the area’s numerous monuments and ANANDA TEMPLE, an
architectural masterpiece of Bagan with four standing Buddha images.
Visit one of the most treasured local cottage industry, a lacquer ware craftsmen’s workshop in nearby MYINKABA village and observe the amazing hand woven, painting, crafting techniques. Resume observation of architectural wonders by a visit to MANUHA TEMPLE, Mon style temple built in 1059 and NANBAYA TEMPLE, a unique expressionist sandstone monument of King Manuha. Continue to SHWESANDAW and prepare to be mesmerized by the decent spell of sunset over the majestic Bagan scenery. Overnight stay in Bagan.
After breakfast, visit the site of
TAYOKEPYAY TEMPLE in Min Nan Thu village; PHAYA THONE ZU and NANDAMANYA TEMPLE
noted for their exquisite murals of 13th century and KYAT KAN CAVE monastery, a
famous meditation retreat in Bagan. After lunch, cross the river by a short
boat ride and have a delightful walk through villages to Mt. Tant Kyi.
Once you get to the base, for energetic, there is a chance to hike up for one and half hours or otherwise drive up the hill by a jeep. On the top spectacular view awaits looking over Ayerwaddy and temples of Bagan in the distance. Walk around the temples and observe famous meditation center of Myanmar. There are also some caves with old Buddha statues inside. Then drive back to boat. It is time to relax and enjoy your sunset over Ayearwaddy. Overnight stay in Bagan.
After breakfast, drive out to MOUNT
POPA (65 km – 1 ½ h), a magical place, an extinct volcano with spectacular
views. Stop en route for an observation of palm sugar production by most simple
method. Sit down in the tent made by palm leaves and tree trunk and sip a cup
tea and have a chat about villager’s life. Down the table mountain, this is the
place dedicated to animist spirits known as "nats", up the mountain
‘Occultist’ known as ‘Wizard’ and the blend of these worship might confuse you
at times but simply fascinating.
For those energetic, there is a chance to climb 777 steps to the shrine at the top of the peak. Retire for the day up on the Mt Popa resort overlooking the central dry plain. Mt Popa resort (****).
In the morning transfer to the Bagan
airport for your flight to Heho. Upon arrival, transfer to Nyaung Shwe and
start your boat trip up on the immense lake to INN THEIN PAGODA complex. Enjoy
walking up the covered stair way up to the top. INN THEIN PAGODA complex is
composed of hundreds of typical Shan style stupas and amazingly beautiful.
Walk through the small red lanes to the villages on the way back to the lake and see the farms, rice fields until to Saema Village. Continue on foot to a village nearby where several crops are grown in traditional ways. Walk in Visit the Shan traditional houses and the typical primary school. Boat back or (for more typically adventurous) canoe back on the lake through the small creek to the main area of the lake and visit PAUNG DAW OO PAGODA. There is also a chance to join the local family for lunch. Overnight stay in Inle Lake.
In the morning, start your boat trip to NAMPAN VILLAGE. Charming boat ride on
the immense lake will take about 2 and half hours to reach SAGAR AND THA KONG.
If the particular day suits for the travel, we will stop at a morning market on
your way to Sagar. The market rotates locations on a 5-day basis. Go ashore
through the villages of Pa-O, Inthar, Shan and Padaung ethnics where lifestyle
is still unique as yet undisturbed by modernization.
Visit Thaya Gone village, home to Pa-Oh, Shan and Inthar people and known in the region for rice wine production. Learn the process of distillation local way and then sample some of the local brew if you wish. Learn also how villagers produce authentic local products such as pottery, bamboo ware, sugar cane, weaving, fishery products and much more without the help of electricity. Roam around the ruins and Shan style pagoda complex of 17th century. Enjoy your picnic lunch. Overnight stay in Inle Lake.
Upon arrival, the marking point for nice walking
is on the strand road, near STRAND HOTEL and CENTRAL POST. Go on walking to
PANSODAN JETTY and see how people load and unload things for trading by the
famous river port. Walk pass many local shops of the busy city and Yangon’s
somehow Dickensian colonial buildings.
Some are yellow and green with age and
mosses but still impressive. Discover gold shops in Shwe Bontha Street and
observe how people love gold in order to save money in Myanmar. There are
important administrative buildings such as HIGH COURT and CITY HALL. Visit SULE
PADOGA, dating back over 2000 years. Walk up to BOGYOKE (SCOTTS) MARKET where
you will find hundreds of food, clothes, handicrafts and gems stores (closed on
Mondays and on public holidays).
Until the late afternoon time is at your disposal, then set out for SHWEDAGON PAGODA complete your Myanmar impressions with a visit to one of the world’s most spectacular monuments.
After breakfast, drive to KYAIK HTI
YOE (110 km – 3 ½ hours). Kyaikhtiyo or the Golden Rock, the most famous
pilgrimage site in Myanmar, is perhaps also the most revered and mysterious
pagoda in Myanmar. It is, in fact, a huge boulder completely covered by gold
leaves and precariously and delicately balancing on the edge of a cliff.
Upon
arrival to KIN PUN base camp continues your journey up the hill on an open
truck. The reason is that the road is so steep and rocky from KIN PUN base camp
and private cars are not allowed to go beyond that point for the safety
travels. Remark: This journey is made in open trucks, which are very crowded.
The upper area must be travelled by foot and the walk is approximately 4 km up a steep path which ascends some 500 m to the GOLDEN ROCK.( If you wish to take a more comfortable approach, you can sit back and be carried in sedan chair by four porters) On arrival you can enjoy the beautiful sunset. Overnight stay in Kyaik Hti Yoe.
After breakfast, drive down and head back to YANGON (194 km – 5 hours). En route, have lunch at local restaurant to your own account. After lunch visit Bago city, famous SHWEMAWDAW PAGODA with its spire taller than the SHWEDAGON PAGODA, the 55 meter long reclining SHWE THA LYAUNG Buddha image, the four giant Buddha images at KYAIK PUN PAGODA and the Kanbawza Thadi Palace, and proceed back to YANGON. On arrival, check in the hotel in Yangon.
After breakfast, transfer to the Airport for your international flight.
